Long time member, Ivan Miller, was inducted into the
Coaches Hall of Fame by the Iowa Golf Association!
A four-decade coaching career was honored when Ivan Miller of Eldora was
inducted into the Iowa High School Golf Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame
recently. Miller taught the game of golf
to hundreds of high school students during his 43-years of coaching and many
more youths during summer programs. “I always promoted the game as a
lifetime sport and encouraged kids to go out,” said Miller. “We always had
good numbers on the team and I took pride in that.”
Pine Lake Country Club was built in 1927
and designed by Leo F. Wolcott and is surrounded by Pine Lake
State Park. The course is cut out of thick woods, which makes for
narrow fairways and lots of challenges from trees and hills. There is
a mixture of green size and running contour. Many would be considered
small but easy to hold most of the summer. Fairway watering makes the
course park-like the entire summer.
The spacious clubhouse
carries a full line of equipment, plus a banquet room available for private
rental and a bar area that
serves sandwiches and snacks. The course also has another natural resource: Ivan
Miller. Ivan has won over 130 tournaments, including the Iowa Masters,
and was voted Player of the Year in 1980 and 1982.
Pine Lake has also been
recognized by the National Golfing Foundation as being one of the six best
golf courses in Iowa. Annually, it is mentioned by a variety of polls
as being one of the most beautiful in Iowa. Number 9 is listed as one
of the Hall of Fame holes. Not only does the course offer beauty but
the surrounding park has many activities including camping, hiking, boating,
fishing, swimming and tubing down the Iowa River.
